Detoxification is a current topic of discussion. Choosing a healthy lifestyle will support your body’s own, natural detoxification process to remove harmful substances, be they toxins or wastes. Yoga is part of a healthy lifestyle.

How Yoga Provides a Detox

Yoga helps to remove toxins and wastes from the body. A consistent yoga practice aids the removal of harmful substances by improving circulation and lung function. The circulatory system provides blood to the kidneys and liver, two organs whose jobs include waste removal.

Kidneys filter the blood of waste materials; the liver produces bile to help carry away wastes and clears the blood of bacteria, drugs and/or other poisonous substances.

The liver excretes wastes and toxins either into the bile to exit the body as feces or into the blood to be filtered in the kidneys exiting the body as urine.

The respiratory system provides the oxygen critical for our bodies and it wouldn’t be an understatement to say it is a necessity for human life. Oxygen is necessary to breathe of course, but it’s also crucial for energy production. Oxygen is also required for the oxidation-reduction (redox) cycle in the liver. The Redox cycle plays an important role in the body’s metabolism and clearance of toxins from the body.

Yoga with its emphasis on the breath and various asanas (poses) from standing to inverted, horizontal or bending benefits the circulatory system improving blood flow, reducing blood pressure and lowering stress hormone levels. Those actions facilitate optimal delivery of blood and, therefore, oxygen and nutrients to the body. Emphasizing the breath not only increases oxygen delivery, but maximizes expiration and the removal of carbon dioxide.

Other reasons to include yoga in your day-to-day life to aid the elimination of toxins:

1. Yoga is an excellent form of exercise. Exercise increases oxygen consumption and stimulates better circulation.

2. Yoga twists in particular massage abdominal organs and assist in the movement of lymph. Lymph is a type of bodily fluid. One of the functions of lymph is to remove bacteria from body tissues, transferring it back to the blood to be filtered and later excreted.

Support your body’s natural removal of harmful substances naturally…do yoga!
